1”x30” Belt Sander

The 1”x30” belt sander has quickly gained popularity as one of the finest sharpening tools available and is often seen in knife shops and at shows throughout the country.  This sander is ideal for knife sharpening when used with the proper belts.  It is small and handy to move around wherever you need it.

KnifeMasters Pro Sharpening System is the exact system used to sharpen thousands of knives at shows and through mail-order knife sharpening businesses.  The kit includes a 1” x 30” belt sander, 80, 600, 800, & 1,000 grit sanding belts, leather stropping belt, stropping compound, diamond file for serrated knives, safety glasses, and on-line instructional videos of how to properly sharpen your knife on a belt sander.

The sharpener puts a convex edge on the knife which takes off less metal than traditional sharpening and holds its edge longer.  The convex edge has become the most popular sharpening technique used by custom knife makers.  The 1” x 30” sharpener is compact and easily sits on a kitchen counter or shop bench.  The belts are easily changed in seconds, and are available in grits from 120 to 1000.  The 120 grit is only used to fix broken tips, chips and work on very dull blades.  You can also use it to sharpen lawn mower blades, hatchets, axes, etc.

Once your blades are sharp, all you have to do is strop them a few seconds on the leather belt and they will be razor sharp again.  If you have never sharpened a knife before on a belt sander, you owe it to yourself to give it a try.  You will never use another sharpening tool again!

The procedure for using a belt sander is similar to any other sharpening.  As with any abrasive on a soft or flexible backing, the abrasive must move off the edge to avoid the blade catching on the belt.  On most knives, you can start with the 600 grit and move your way up to the 1,000 grit before finishing with the stropping belt and polishing compound.  With this type of sharpening, you always move the belt away from the cutting edge instead of cutting into the motion of the belt.
